How this is calculated
Usable volume is the container’s internal volume multiplied by your loading utilization percentage. Max boxes by volume divides that by your box’s volume. The result also checks whether the container’s weight limit would be reached first.
Frequently asked questions
Why isn't the max box count just container volume ÷ box volume?
Real containers never load at 100% efficiency — irregular stacking, bracing, and pallet shape all waste some space. Industry sources commonly cite a realistic 80-90% usable range, and this calculator defaults to the conservative middle of that (85%) so a planning estimate errs toward a little unused space rather than a failed loading. Well-packed uniform cartons can reach the top of the range (~90%) — the field is adjustable, so raise it if that describes your shipment. It also checks the container's weight limit in case that's the binding constraint before volume is.
Which container size should I choose?
A 40ft high cube offers the most volume per container, but a 20ft may be more cost-effective for heavier, denser cargo that hits the weight limit long before it fills the space.
