Retirement Visa Financial Requirement Checker

Check whether you meet the deposit, income, or combination requirement for the Non-Immigrant O/O-A retirement extension.

Before you rely on this

Immigration rules change, and individual offices sometimes apply their own documentation requirements on top of the national rule. This tool estimates eligibility under the commonly cited national requirement — it is not legal advice and is not affiliated with Thai Immigration. Confirm current rules with your local immigration office or the Immigration Bureau before making plans.

How long the money has already sat in the account, untouched.

Financial requirement

May qualify

Meets the requirement via: Bank deposit, Combination.

Method by method

Bank deposit (฿800,000)

Deposit amount and seasoning both meet the requirement.

Monthly income (฿65,000/month)

Monthly income is below the ฿65,000 required.

Combination of deposit + income

Combined deposit + annual income meets the requirement.

After your extension is approved

Most immigration offices require the account to hold at least ฿400,000 for the 3 months following approval, and won’t look favorably on it dropping below that floor afterward either — even though the full ฿800,000 only needs to be re-seasoned in the run-up to each annual renewal.

Applying for O-A specifically

The O-A category (applied for at a Thai embassy or consulate before arrival, as opposed to a Non-Immigrant O extension converted after entering the country) additionally requires health insurance with a minimum sum insured of ฿3,000,000 for the full duration of stay, per requirements effective 2021. This replaced an earlier, much lower ฿400,000 inpatient / ฿40,000 outpatient minimum — confirm the current figure with the specific embassy or consulate handling your application, since requirements are set per-post.

How this is calculated

  1. Age must be 50 or older — this applies regardless of method.
  2. Bank deposit method: a deposit of at least ฿800,000 in a Thai bank account, seasoned for at least 2 months before a first application.
  3. Monthly income method: verifiable income of at least ฿65,000 per month.
  4. Combination method: your deposit plus 12 months of income together reach ฿800,000, with the deposit portion still meeting the seasoning requirement.
  5. You qualify if your age and at least one of the three methods are met.

Seasoning rules for the deposit

For a first-time application, the full deposit needs to have sat in the account for at least 2 months before you apply — immigration is checking that the funds are genuinely yours, not a short-term loan to pad the balance. After your extension is approved, most offices expect the account to hold at least ฿400,000 for the following 3 months, and the full ฿800,000 to be seasoned again before each annual renewal.

Frequently asked questions

Does this apply to both the O and O-A retirement visa?

The financial requirement (deposit, income, or combination) is the same for both. The O-A, obtained from a Thai embassy or consulate before arrival, additionally requires health insurance with a minimum sum insured of ฿3,000,000 for the full duration of stay — this tool doesn't check that requirement. It does not apply to a Non-Immigrant O extension converted after entering Thailand on a different visa type.

What counts as 'seasoning' for the deposit?

It's how long the required deposit has sat in your Thai bank account, untouched, before you apply. Immigration wants to see the money was genuinely there, not moved in the day before your appointment.

Can the rules differ by immigration office?

Yes. Thailand's national rules set the floor, but individual immigration offices sometimes apply additional documentation requirements or stricter interpretations. Always confirm with the specific office handling your extension.

What happens to the deposit after my extension is approved?

Most offices require you to maintain at least ฿400,000 in the account for the 3 months following approval, and to keep the full ฿800,000 seasoned again before each annual renewal.
