How this is calculated
For each supplier, total cost is unit price times your quantity needed, plus their total shipping cost. Cost per unit divides that by your quantity needed, and suppliers are ranked from lowest to highest on that figure.
Frequently asked questions
Why does the lowest unit price supplier not always win?
A supplier with a lower unit price but much higher shipping cost can end up more expensive per unit overall, especially at lower order quantities where shipping cost is spread across fewer units. Ranking by total cost per unit accounts for this.
Should I include duty and clearance fees per supplier?
Only if they differ meaningfully between suppliers — for example, different countries of origin with different duty rates. If duty and clearance costs would be the same regardless of supplier, you can leave them out and compare on unit price and shipping alone.
